Redstreak Apple

An old English cider variety producing a bittersharp juice. The variety is traditionally said to have first appeared in the early 17th century. small, roundish, pale yellow with numerous faint red streaks. Firm flesh, full of juice, and when ripe, finely flavored. The tree's habit was described as "singularly awkward, ragged and unsightly". The Redstreak was classed as a "bittersweet" cider apple variety, and was the first of the bittersweet varieties to appear in England. Produces an excellent cider and helped to establish the reputation of Herefordshire as a cider producing county. It had declined by the 1700s, but one tree was known to have survived. Subsequently many red-streaked apples have been given this name. Ripens in November.
