To 15'. Zone 4. Often a broad shrub with numerous spreading stems. Flowers April to August depending on location. Fruit August to September often abundant, a berry like drupe, ΒΌ" dia. Black but appearing blue due to heavy bloom. Flesh is sweet, juicy, edible when cooked. Compound, deciduous leaves. Twigs stout, smooth, somewhat angled, green to reddish brown. Found in moist places along creeks and in canyons. Plant sprouts readily from base and grows rapidly. Serves as food for many forms of wildlife. Often used in jams, jellies, pies, wine and medicinally. Canes or branches may die back to the ground in winter.
