Downy Hawthorn
Crataegus mollis
20'-30'. Zone 3. Rounded to wide-spreading tree with varying degrees of thorniness. Branches take on a gray cast and are quite different from most hawthorns. Young leaves are very downy when unfolding and gradually change to a flat medium green in summer and can turn yellow to bronze to bronze-red in fall. White flowers, 1” diameter, borne in 3”-4”clusters. Fruit is red, ½”-1” diameter. Good wildlife plant.
